Your truck has two tie rods, one connected to each front wheel. Tie rods are small components with a simple job…they connect the steering system to the front wheels. Tie rods, or more specifically tie rod ends, contain a bearing that allows movement as the steering wheel is turned back and forth.

Particularly on heavy vehicles, these bearings wear out over time. At first, symptoms are loose steering, vibration, and a light knocking sound over bumps and turns. However, if neglected, a tie rod will eventually fail. When a tie rod breaks, nothing is there to direct the wheel. Steering is not only lost, but the wheel is capable of turning any direction, even completely perpendicular. As soon as a tie rod breaks, control is lost, and the truck will be brought to a screeching halt, likely damaging other components and putting people at risk in the process.
