I Don’t Hear My Car Shift, Is There Something Wrong With My Transmission?

Jan 20, 2023

At KG Truck & Auto in Glen Burnie, MD, we understand that there are endless ways a transmission can sound, behave, and feel, depending on what type of car it’s in, what type of transmission it is, and the state of the vehicle’s repair. Sometimes, when people buy a different car, they notice it doesn’t act the same as their last car, which leads them to believe there is a problem.

If your transmission isn’t shifting because something is wrong with it, it will most likely be obvious to you. A car that is refusing to shift or skipping gears will either run very high RPM at normal speeds or take off very slowly with noticeably little power. If your car does either of these things, have it serviced and inspected immediately. If your concern is only that you can’t hear or feel the transmission shifting, we have good news for you.

Some transmissions are designed with comfort and luxury in mind. Engineers have worked tirelessly over decades to perfect transmissions that shift so smoothly and silently, the driver doesn’t even know it’s happened while maintaining performance and reliability. Particularly in the modern era, this has become more commonplace; computer-controlled systems nearly eliminate all traces of a shift in some cars. It could be that you’ve grown accustomed to a certain sound or feel, and now that you are driving a car without it you can’t help but notice. As long as your car feels like it is driving comfortably, and isn’t behaving abnormally, it is probable that your transmission is just doing its job so well, you question whether it’s even doing anything at all.

If you think your case is the opposite, and your car is exhibiting symptoms of missed shifts and missing gears, let your expert transmission technicians at KG Truck & Auto take a look. If your mind is now at ease knowing your transmission is simply a smooth shifting and perfectly functioning machine, be sure to keep it that way by maintaining it at regular intervals and watching for signs of trouble. Whether you need repair or maintenance, come by or call anytime. We’ll keep you moving forward.
